Closing Out the Month: Progress, Challenges, and a Call for Accountability

Closing Out the Month: Progress, Challenges, and a Call for Accountability As we wrap up this month at Mojave Complete Recovery, we’re proud to reflect on the strides we’ve made as a clinic and a team. We’ve welcomed new patients, expanded our reach into the community, and strengthened partnerships that will help us better serve those who need us most. Every new connection is a reminder of why we do this work—to help individuals and families heal, recover, and move forward. Yet, alongside these successes, we must also acknowledge the barriers that continue to slow down our ability to deliver care. One of the greatest challenges we face today is the ongoing delay in state processing. Licensing, credentialing, and approvals remain  months behind schedule , leaving clinics like ours unable to fully operate despite having staff, space, and a deep demand for services. For the communities we serve—individuals struggling with addiction, families torn apart by substance use, and vul...

Understanding MAT: What Medication-Assisted Treatment Really Means

Understanding MAT: What Medication-Assisted Treatment Really Means When people hear the words “Medication-Assisted Treatment,” or MAT, it’s common for myths and misconceptions to get in the way of the truth. Some assume it’s just “replacing one drug with another.” Others believe it means giving up on recovery altogether. But the reality is far different—and far more hopeful. At Mojave Center for Recovery, we see MAT for what it truly is: a lifesaving tool that, when paired with counseling and support, helps people build a healthier, more stable future. What MAT Actually Is Medication-Assisted Treatment combines  FDA-approved medications  with  behavioral health counseling and support . The medications—such as buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone—help reduce withdrawal symptoms, manage cravings, and stabilize brain chemistry. This isn’t about “getting high.” These medications are carefully managed by medical professionals to help patients function normally, reduc...

Insurance & Stigma: Breaking Down Barriers to Mental Health Treatment

Insurance & Stigma: Breaking Down Barriers to Mental Health Treatment When someone decides to seek help for their mental health or addiction, they’re already taking one of the bravest steps of their life. But too often, that first step collides with a wall of barriers—confusion about insurance, uncertainty about coverage, or even being told that their treatment “isn’t included.” These moments aren’t just frustrating. They reinforce the stigma that mental health is somehow “less important” than physical health. At Mojave Center for Recovery, we believe it’s time to break that down. The Hidden Barrier of Insurance Stigma For decades, insurance providers treated behavioral health as a secondary concern. Fewer networks, lower reimbursements, and restrictive policies sent an unspoken message: mental health wasn’t equal to physical health. While mental health parity laws now require insurers to cover behavioral health at the same level as medical care, the lived experience for pati...

If there’s anything this month reminds us, it’s that  one caring voice can make all the difference. How Mojave Stands With You At Mojave Center for Recovery, we view recove...

On the Margins and Beyond: Serving Justice-Involved Clients Battling Addiction

On the Margins and Beyond: Serving Justice-Involved Clients Battling Addiction When someone walks out of jail, they're not stepping into a clean slate — they’re walking into a world where fentanyl lurks on every corner, and hope is in short supply. In Maricopa County,  fentanyl now contributes to approximately 60% of all drug-related deaths  — that’s more than  three lives lost every single day  to overdose in our community 1 . In 2023,  Arizona saw nearly 1,930 opioid overdose deaths , with  Maricopa County ranked among the highest-rate counties  in the state 2 . The risk isn’t hypothetical — it’s constant and deadly. Now imagine returning from incarceration with nothing but the clothes on your back. No home. No job. No support. And maybe, a serious addiction you were never able to shake. The odds of staying clean, finding safety, and building a life feel impossible. And for many, they are. The Danger of the First 72 Hours Studies have shown th...

I’m Not Gone—Just Invisible: A Phoenix Story

I’m Not Gone—Just Invisible: A Phoenix Story Note: The following is fictional—“Gabe” does not exist—but this story reflects the real struggles faced by many in our community. Every statistic is true, every moment feels painfully possible. My Name Is Gabe—And I’m Still Here The sun blazed down again today, turning sidewalks into ovens and destitution into life or death. Two weeks ago—right there, at the McDowell bus stop across from Mojave—another person died. First it was a woman, collapsed still, her life lost to the heat. Three days later, it happened again. I've met too many whose shadows vanish at that same corner. These deaths aren’t surprising. An ABC15 investigation found that at least  40 people have died at bus stops in Phoenix from heat-related causes . Two-thirds of those heat deaths occurred outdoors—and  meth was involved in 75% of drug-related heat deaths in Maricopa County . When Survival Isn’t Enough I lost count of nights spent outside before my shoes fell apa...
